How excited would you be if I told you there was a JRPG that involved time travel and had a frog companion who wielded a sword? What if I said Masato Kato, the writer of Chrono Trigger, was making it? Because if that’s got you interested, then you might want to check out Another Eden Begins.
A retelling of the mobile game Another Eden, Begins nixes the gacha system, reworks the combat, and covers the first twenty or so chapters from the original release. I’d never played the original mobile release, so I was eager to try this, and what I got was a satisfying JRPG with great chibi art.
My demo starts with a brief introduction to the world: Aldo lives in a peaceful village until it’s attacked by the Beast King and his sister is kidnapped. Aldo is then tossed through a tear in time and finds he can travel to the past, present, and future. I opted to go to the past for my demo, and found myself fighting hordes of dinosaurs as I explored the prehistoric level I was in.
The game plays like your typical JRPG, but its main hook is that during combat you want to focus your party on making sure you’re always targeting an enemy’s weakness. Doing so will fill a character’s gauge, which, when maxed out, will allow them to chain additional attacks for free on an enemy. It’s a neat system, and with the game boasting upwards of 18 characters, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of team combos you can try out.
Another Eden Begins releases thankfully later this month, so if you’re interested, you won’t have to wait too long to get your hands on it.
