Dark Adelita will launch on Steam on May 5, 2026, developer Brain-dead Rabbit Games and publisher indie.io announced.
Set in 1918, near the end of the Mexican Revolution, the sidescrolling action game follows Angela, a veteran fighter forced into a new battle as an ancient evil begins spreading across Mexico. As folklore-inspired creatures emerge and darkness takes hold, Angela sets out with her rifle to confront the force behind it.
A sidescrolling shooter rooted in Mexican folklore
In Dark Adelita, players run, jump, and shoot through fast-paced stages while fighting enemies controlled by a supernatural power drawn from ancient Mexican myths. The story takes place during a period of upheaval in Mexico, combining revolutionary history with elements of horror and folklore.
Angela’s journey takes her across different Mexican states as she faces monsters brought to life from legend. According to the announcement, the game’s setting, enemies, and atmosphere are all closely tied to Mexican culture and history.
Fast-paced combat and high-stakes encounters
Combat in Dark Adelita is built around quick movement and precision. Angela is heavily outnumbered, and the game emphasizes dodging enemy attacks and reacting quickly under pressure. Players will use her rifle, along with additional weapons and special abilities, as they move through increasingly dangerous stages.
The game also frames each encounter as a high-risk challenge, with survival depending on reflexes, positioning, and careful use of Angela’s tools.
Retro visuals and a historical horror setting
Dark Adelita uses retro-style pixel art to bring its world to life, blending sidescrolling action with a darker visual tone inspired by myth and horror. The developers say the project is designed to highlight Mexican culture through its setting and themes while delivering a fast-paced action experience.
