Alongside the trailer reveal, Bandai Namco also announced that Sword Art Online games have now surpassed 10 million units sold worldwide. The new title is set in the floating castle of Aincrad and follows players as they fight to survive in a VRMMORPG where death in-game means death in the real world.
A new story set in Aincrad
In Echoes of Aincrad, players will explore the world of Aincrad while working to escape the deadly virtual world. The game centers on a journey through dangerous environments filled with monsters, dungeons, and boss battles, with players joining forces with familiar characters from the series along the way.
For the first time in the franchise, the game places players in the role of an original protagonist rather than one of the anime’s main characters. Players will be able to create and customize their own avatar through a full character creator.
Real-time combat and companion systems
Echoes of Aincrad features real-time action RPG combat, with players able to upgrade their weapons, equipment, and attributes while choosing Sword Skills that match their preferred playstyle.
The game also includes a companion system, with players selecting partners who bring different abilities and skills into battle. As players progress, they will unlock stronger combat options and additional abilities tied to those companions.
Bandai Namco says players will travel through a range of locations, from open plains to dungeons, while taking on increasingly difficult enemies and bosses.
