Metro 2039 has been officially revealed by 4A Games and is set to launch this winter for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
The announcement followed a new showcase stream, presented in collaboration with Xbox, featuring interviews with members of the development team, a reveal trailer, and a first look at gameplay from the next mainline entry in the Metro series.
A new story set in Moscow’s tunnels in 2039
Set 25 years after nuclear war, Metro 2039 returns players to the tunnels beneath Moscow, where survivors remain trapped underground under the rule of the Novoreich. The new regime is led by a Fuhrer known as Hunter, who promises salvation on the surface while communities below continue to live under propaganda and authoritarian control.
Players take on the role of The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares who is forced to return to the Metro after swearing never to go back. According to 4A Games, The Stranger will be a fully voiced protagonist.
Reveal stream showed story, atmosphere, and gameplay
The 15-minute showcase included interviews with Executive Producer Jon Bloch, Creative Director Andriy “mLs” Shevchenko, and Co-Creative Director & Lead Audio Designer Pavel Ulmer.
It also featured a six-minute reveal trailer and a gameplay tease showing the game’s environments, weapons, wristwatch interface, and a mutant encounter. The footage was captured using a mix of gameplay and real-time cinematics.
Development shaped by Ukraine
4A Games said the development of Metro 2039 has been directly shaped by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with the story placing greater emphasis on choices, consequences, and the cost of securing a future.
The studio said the game remains an authentic Metro story, told from a distinctly Ukrainian perspective. Development is taking place in Kyiv and Malta.
