Kemuri Gameplay Revealed, Unseen’s Yokai Action Game Launches on PS5 in 2027

Unseen has shared the first gameplay trailer and new details for Kemuri, its upcoming yokai-possession action game for PlayStation 5. Revealed during Sony’s State of Play, the supernatural adventure is set to launch in 2027.

Kemuri takes place in Kemuri City, a vertical urban setting where life and death overlap. Players explore rooftops, back alleys, and hidden ruins while confronting paranormal threats alone or in online co-op with up to two other players.

Welcome to Kemuri City

Kemuri City sits on the boundary between the living world and the afterlife. It has become an unusual tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the globe despite the danger surrounding it.

The city’s paranormal activity ties directly to yokai. Some draw from traditional folklore, while others are original creatures created for the game. These yokai are born from Kemuri, described as the lingering emotions and thoughts of humanity and the city itself.

That concept shapes the setting, where reality can shift without warning and ordinary spaces can suddenly open into something supernatural.

Players Become Yokai Hunters

In Kemuri, players take on the role of yokai hunters who arrive in the city carrying their own cultures, histories, and losses. As hunters, players search for yokai, form contracts with them, and use their powers in combat.

Combat allows for different approaches. Some hunters focus on close-range attacks, while others fight from a distance or use supernatural abilities tied to prayers and talismans.

The game supports solo play, but Unseen also confirmed online co-op for up to three players. In multiplayer, players can explore the city together while taking on different roles in combat and traversal.

The Foxwindow Reveals Hidden Realms

One of Kemuri’s central mechanics is the Foxwindow. By forming a hand gesture and looking through the gap between their fingers, players can reveal hidden fractures between the living world and yokai realms.

These spaces are designed to shift the tone from horror to mystery, beauty, and nostalgia. The Foxwindow appears to be a key part of exploration, helping players find paranormal anomalies hidden throughout the city.

Yokai Powers Become Possession Apparel

Defeating yokai is only part of the process. Players can also form contracts with them, turning their powers into Possession Apparel.

These yokai-based forms change a hunter’s appearance and combat style. Over time, the powers may begin to feel less like borrowed tools and more like part of the hunter’s identity.

Unseen’s Global Team Builds a Supernatural Tokyo Vision

Kemuri is in development at Unseen, the Tokyo-based studio led by Ikumi Nakamura. The team includes creators from different countries and backgrounds, with the studio aiming to bring those perspectives into the game’s supernatural city.

Kemuri is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 in 2027.
