Insomniac Games has shared an extended new look at Marvel’s Wolverine during Sony’s State of Play, revealing fresh gameplay footage, story details, major characters, and pre-order information ahead of the game’s launch on September 15, 2026.
The new trailer showcases Logan’s brutal combat style while introducing key story elements centered around the persecution of mutants and Wolverine’s return to a team he left behind years earlier.
Logan Returns to Protect Mutants
Marvel’s Wolverine follows James “Logan” Howlett as he investigates a series of mutant abductions carried out by the Reavers, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary group. The captured mutants are being delivered to billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask, who is driven by a belief in human superiority.
The trailer also confirms the appearance of Jean Grey, who plays a major role in the story as a powerful telekinetic mutant and emerging leader among those being hunted.
Mutants live hidden from the rest of society, fearful of the growing threats against them. With few willing to help, a mutant task force known as Team X becomes one of the last lines of defense. Logan rejoins the group after leaving three years earlier, placing him back in the center of the conflict.
New Combat Systems Revealed
The gameplay footage highlights a fast-paced combat system built around Wolverine’s claws, mobility, and healing abilities.
Players can stalk enemies, perform aerial ambushes, and chain together brutal melee attacks. Logan also gains access to special combat abilities called Techniques, including attacks such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush.
Jean Grey can join Wolverine in battle, using telekinetic powers to damage enemies and create opportunities for powerful Critical Strikes. These cinematic finishing moves can be performed alone or alongside allies.
A new Rage system rewards aggressive play. Successful attacks, parries, and kills build Logan’s Rage meter, allowing him to unleash stronger attacks or activate his Healing Factor to recover from severe damage.
When Rage reaches its highest level, players can trigger Rage Tier 3, a black-and-white combat mode inspired by Marvel’s Black, White & Blood comic series.
Motorcycle Combat and Large-Scale Set Pieces
The trailer also offers a look at one of the game’s action set pieces, with Wolverine pursuing enemies across a highway on a motorcycle.
Players can leap between vehicles, slash tires, destroy trucks, and battle powerful enemies known as Brutes while speeding down the road. Even when heavily injured, Logan can activate a Last Stand state that uses his Healing Factor to keep him in the fight.
Accessibility Features Confirmed
Insomniac Games also confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will launch with a broad suite of accessibility options designed to support players with cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor disabilities.
The studio says accessibility has remained a core part of development throughout production.
