God of War Laufey Revealed, Faye Takes the Lead in Santa Monica Studio’s Next Epic

Santa Monica Studio has officially unveiled God of War Laufey, the next mainline entry in the God of War franchise. This time, the spotlight shifts from Kratos and Atreus to Laufey, better known as Faye, as players embark on a new adventure through a mysterious realm beyond death.

The game is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and is available to wishlist now.

Faye Takes Center Stage

God of War Laufey begins after Faye’s funeral. Death should have been the end of her story, but she unexpectedly awakens in a strange realm known as the Everywhen. There, she discovers that the plans she set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus may be unraveling.

To save her family, Faye must journey through the afterlife of the gods, battling powerful beings from multiple mythologies while uncovering the secrets of a realm where magic itself originates and returns.

Santa Monica Studio says the game retains the pillars that define the series: brutal combat, exploration, and character-driven storytelling. At the same time, the team has built a combat system tailored specifically to Faye’s abilities and fighting style.

Exploring the Everywhen

The Everywhen serves as the game’s central setting. Described as the birthplace and endpoint of all magic, it exists beyond the realms players have previously explored in the Norse saga. Gods, creatures, and mythological figures from different pantheons coexist there, often violently.

The reveal trailer briefly introduced two hostile gods Faye will encounter: Sekhmet and Begtse. As Faye searches for a way home, she must uncover why the natural flow of magic has been disrupted and determine if the Everywhen is a paradise, a prison, or something else entirely.

New Allies Join the Journey

Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye from God of War Ragnarök. She’ll be joined by two new companions throughout the adventure.

Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is a sentient cosmic cube who dedicates himself to protecting his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen. Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau, serves as the guardian of a powerful enchanted sword that becomes central to Faye’s journey.

Together, they travel deeper into the Everywhen and encounter gods, monsters, and supernatural beings from across mythology.

Faster Combat and New Powers

Santa Monica Studio describes Faye’s combat as more agile and fluid than previous entries. Drawing inspiration from both the Greek-era God of War games and the modern Norse saga, players can seamlessly transition between aerial and ground attacks while maintaining offensive momentum.

Faye wields a legendary sword during her journey, emphasizing speed, control, and relentless attack chains. Her mobility allows for expanded offensive and defensive options, creating a faster-paced combat style than fans may be accustomed to.

The game also highlights Faye’s role as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar. Her giant magic allows her to manipulate souls directly. In combat, she can separate an enemy’s soul from its body and use it as a weapon, creating new combo opportunities and strategic options.

A New Direction for God of War

According to Santa Monica Studio, God of War Laufey combines the movement and action of the original Greek saga with the character-driven storytelling and world-building introduced during the Norse era.

While a release date has not yet been announced, the studio says it will reveal more details about the Everywhen, Faye’s abilities, and the game’s broader mythology as development continues.
