Section 9 Interactive and Epic Games Publishing will release a new End of Abyss behind-the-scenes video on Thursday, kicking off a weekly series leading into the game’s October 1 launch.
The first video, titled Entering the Facility: Meet the Creators, looks at the sci-fi horror game’s origins, its team, and the influences behind its decaying underground facility.
Inside Section 9 Interactive
In the video, programmer and co-founder Mattias Ottvall explains that three former Tarsier Studios members founded Section 9 Interactive.
Ottvall says End of Abyss began as an older prototype that he and his brother revisited after leaving Tarsier. The project started faster and closer to a top-down action shooter, but changed once Gustaf Heinerwall joined and the small team leaned further into atmosphere, pacing, and environmental design.
A Facility Frozen in Time
Environment artist Gustav Bunse talks about building a place where sunlight barely reaches.
He describes parts of the facility as old, but not fully decayed, with spaces that feel like time has stopped. That sense of isolation feeds into the feeling of entering somewhere that has not seen people in a long time.
Monsters, Gore, and Ambushes
Character artist Olivia discusses turning concepts into 3D models and filling in details not shown in the original art.
The video also touches on the game’s monster design and violent combat. The team cites old monster movies and over-the-top gore as inspiration, with enemies that can ambush players and keep them cautious even when they feel in control.
Challenge Without Grinding
The team describes End of Abyss as accessible, but still challenging.
Rather than leaning on experience grinding, the game rewards players through upgraded gear, new equipment, and careful play. Combat is meant to push players without making progress feel like a slog.
Launching October 1
End of Abyss launches October 1, 2026, for PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Pre-orders are available now, and the new behind-the-scenes series will continue weekly until launch.
