Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn Preview – Dark Fantasy and Intense Combat

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an action RPG with elements of the souls-like genre developed by A44 Games. The game unfolds in a dark fantasy realm where gods and their undead armies wreak havoc upon the world.

The game presents an intriguing clash between divine forces and firearms as players engage in intense combat using a combination of melee combat, gunpowder weapons, and magical abilities. I had the chance to play a hands-on demo of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn at the Xbox Games Showcase, and I was thoroughly impressed with the combat mechanics and the sense of exploration it offers.

Players assume the role of Nor, a member of the Coalition army, joined by a mystical fox-like companion named Enki, who assists in both combat and exploration. Enki can curse enemies during battles and help uncover hidden secrets in the world.

Mastering Combat in Flintlock: Nor and Enki’s Abilities

In combat, Nor confronts a variety of enemies, each requiring different strategies and approaches. While standard foes may be tackled head-on, bosses demand that players learn their attack patterns for parries and dodges, as well as exploit their weaknesses. The game features a skill tree progression system that allows players to upgrade their weapons and abilities, enhancing Nor’s melee, ranged, and magical capabilities. Enki also has a skill tree, allowing players to customize his abilities to match their playstyle.

Furthermore, the game includes a reputation system that rewards players based on their combat prowess, encouraging a skill-based playstyle focused on dodging, parrying, and using abilities to avoid enemy attacks. Players can trade their earned reputation at settlements for cosmetic items, gear, and enhancements, adding depth to the overall progression and gameplay experience.

Exploring Flintlock: Wide Linear World and Hidden Secrets

Exploration plays a key role in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, with the game featuring a “wide linear” world structure. While the main story follows a linear path, players have the freedom to explore each region, taking on optional side areas, uncovering hidden secrets, and completing challenges before progressing to the next main quest. I stumbled upon a mini-game called Sebo, which involves moving pebbles around a grid to form a triangle, providing a pleasant break from the combat.

Throughout the game, players encounter settlements inhabited by NPCs who offer side quests, trades, and opportunities to rest before continuing their journey. Enki assists in exploration by revealing the world’s secrets, solving environmental puzzles, and navigating toward inaccessible areas using aerial dashes through triangular “rifts.”

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn aspires to reimagine the souls-like genre with its unique take on combat and exploration. While the risk-reward gameplay and combat feel somewhat disjointed from the overall experience it aims to deliver, the game’s world-building, exploration, and lore are particularly noteworthy, leaving me intrigued to delve deeper into the game.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is set to be released on July 18, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
