Panik Arcade Reveals CloverPit, a Twisted Gambling Roguelike for 2025

CloverPit, pitched as a rogue-lite slot machine nightmare, got an announcement trailer today. Why do game developers want to drag something wholesome like gambling through the mud? Panik Arcade, the developers behind cult hit Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, released this announcement trailer along with a demo on Steam.

As someone who will never own property and therefore never be able to file a lien against said property to stave off incoming gambling debts, it makes sense that game developers want to make something as simple as gambling seem even more dangerous. “Do you like gambling?” the trailer asks, as it shows a gritty small room that looks like the back room of a dystopian p*rn theater before the player starts pulling the handle on the slot machine. I’m not disgusted by this, I figured it’s a wildly gamified version of a slot machine and there’s likely some narrative beneath the surface that helps facilitate play beyond the addictive response of gambling. Thankfully, the developers have a note.

Developer’s note: Clover Pit is not a slot machine simulator. Our slot machine is designed to be broken and ultimately overcome. If you’re looking for a real gambling experience please look elsewhere. Or better yet, don’t look at all. We don’t really like gambling. That’s what the game is about!

This is what video gaming is all about. You take something boring and humdrum, like slot machines, and make them fun! CloverPit is being pitched as the “demonic lovechild” of Balatro and Buckshot Roulette, which, well, okay. Aside from the bizarre copy, CloverPit has a hook and an idea that hasn’t been done before to my knowledge. The novelty of death or glory by slot machine is one I’m not familiar with, and I’m glad I learned about it today. Announced at the Triple-i Showcase, the creators want you to know that they’re just a couple of Italian guys and they mean no harm.

Panik Arcade is the neon-coloured brainchild of Matteo and Lorenzo, two Italians raised on pizza, comics and Nintendo 64. Their first title, Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom (‘Platforming bliss’ – The Sixth Axis) launched in April 2024 as a fan favourite, currently standing with over 1000 ‘Overwhelmingly positive’ reviews on Steam, 98% positive reviews. They’re currently working on a follow-up, the hellish rogue-lite Clover Pit.

Honestly, I was sold when they said Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, what would have been 2024’s Game of the Year had Balatro not stolen it from Panik Arcade. Well, now they’re here to steal from Balatro, apparently. Although I don’t see the comparison to Balatro much in the trailer, I’m excited to find out what it is. Let’s see what CloverPit has to offer us in 2025.

CloverPit Key Features

  • A gripping rogue-lite where every round could be your last!
  • Meta-progression, multiple endings, and unlockable power-ups!
  • A hellish escape room atmosphere!
  • 150 + items and synergies to boost your luck!
  • A sinister tale of addiction and escape!

Hell yeah. Really excited to see how the meta-narrative shapes up in CloverPit. Feed into the millennial need to pay down overwhelming debts, this is my hole, it was made for me! CloverPit has no official release date yet, but Panik Arcade and Future Friends Games are aiming for a 2025 release date, so sometime later this year. In the meantime, if you want to give it a SPIN, there is a demo available on their Steam page. If you’re not ready to lose your life savings to your own gambling (as opposed to someone else gambling in the global economy), but it does seem interesting to you, the best thing you can do is wishlist the game. I know the team here will be anticipating more news from Panik Arcade and CloverPit in the coming months, so keep an eye on the front page as we’ll be reporting details as they arrive.
