Sword of the Sea, the next artistic adventure from indie studio Giant Squid, is set to release on August 19, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The announcement was revealed during today’s PlayStation State of Play, alongside a gorgeous new gameplay trailer showing off the game’s signature “hover-surfing” traversal.
Even better, Sword of the Sea will be available day one on PlayStation Plus, making it easy for subscribers to dive into its ocean of surreal beauty on launch.
Ride the Sea That Once Was
In Sword of the Sea, players embark on a solo pilgrimage across vast, shimmering landscapes to uncover an ancient ocean buried beneath the sand. With the Hoversword—a cross between a snowboard, skateboard, and surfboard—you’ll effortlessly ride dunes, trick off ramps, and resurrect a lost world swallowed by time.
What starts as a tranquil journey grows into a sweeping, emotional experience. The world itself reacts to your movement, as deserts turn into vibrant seas and desolate ruins come alive with color and life.
From the Team Behind Journey and ABZÛ
Creative Director Matt Nava and composer Austin Wintory return to deliver another dreamlike world. The pair’s previous collaborations (Journey, ABZÛ, The Pathless) are known for their emotional storytelling, striking visuals, and unforgettable soundtracks, and Sword of the Sea continues that tradition.
Expect:
- A stunning hand-crafted world inspired by skatepark flow and oceanic wonder
- Freestyle movement and trick systems for stylish traversal
- Environmental storytelling with no dialogue—just visuals, sound, and mood
- A sweeping original score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory
