Akira Yamaoka Scores DarkSwitch, a Vertical Survival City Builder

DarkSwitch, the upcoming vertical survival city builder from developer Cyber Temple, is turning heads not just for its woodpunk aesthetic and towering treetop setting, but for its soundtrack — courtesy of legendary composer Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill, The Medium).

In a newly released seven-minute conversation video, Yamaoka discusses his inspirations for joining the project, his creative process, and the specific mood he’s crafting for DarkSwitch: a soundscape that captures the isolation, danger, and oppressive dread of a city clinging to life above a deadly fog.

A City in the Sky, Threatened by the Fog Below

In DarkSwitch, players manage a settlement built atop a colossal tree, high above a shifting, poisonous fog that can sap health, morale, and safety. City building and survival are the core loop, but you’ll also explore the fog-covered world, defend against mysterious threats, and shape the fate of your people through multi-threaded narrative quests.

Cyber Temple’s custom voxel grid fog system ensures no two days are the same — fog patterns change dynamically, forcing players to adapt their city’s lighting, defenses, and exploration plans.

Strategic Survival Gameplay

Players will need to balance:

  • Construction & Technology – Build industrial, social, and defensive structures; research new machinery; expand upward for safety.
  • Resource Management – Allocate scarce raw materials across city needs, defense, and expansion.
  • Exploration & Expeditions – Brave the fog to rescue survivors, uncover artifacts, and learn the fog’s origin.
  • Leader Development – Guide four main protagonists, making hard choices that can reshape the story’s outcome.

Music That Matches the Mist

Yamaoka’s contribution aims to immerse players in DarkSwitch’s blend of hope and foreboding, using layered textures, haunting melodies, and ambient elements that shift with the fog’s unpredictable movements. His signature style — a mix of atmospheric tension and melancholic beauty — is set to become a defining part of the game’s identity.

Release & Platforms

DarkSwitch is currently in development for PC, with no release date announced. Players can wishlist the game on Steam now.
