Today’s Nintendo Direct wasn’t all announcements for new titles. In traditional Nintendo fashion, we were provided a few updates on upcoming releases like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The highly anticipated sequel had some new mechanics and functionality dropped on us during the Direct. Let’s take a look.
Hyrule Warriors itself is a spin-off Zelda game in the musou genre. A musou game is basically an open-world hack and slash game where you use a variety of characters and weapon combos to complete objectives or storm and hold castles on an open battlefield. Essentially, Hyrule Warriors is a Legend of Zelda-themed Dynasty Warriors game. The original, released on the Wii U in 2014, received critical acclaim and managed to outsell Japan in the West. It would have two follow-up titles, Hyrule Warriors Legends (which was more of a remaster for 3DS and Switch), and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Introduces New Features
We are introduced to a few new mechanics and functionality in the video above. Showing off new characters, Zonai devices, and Sync Strikes to add spice and Tears of the Kingdom into the formula.
Surprisingly, no one who played Tears of the Kingdom, King Rauru, and Queen Sonia will be added to the cast of characters in the latest Hyrule Warriors game. The Zonai royalty power couple, who originally founded Hyrule, will join their descendant Princess Zelda on the battlefield. Along with the royal family, we were given a glimpse of another fighter, a lil’ Korok warrior. So cute!
Along with these new characters, we’re shown Sync Strikes, attacks that allow the player to pair up with a teammate on the battlefield to deliver a powerful blow. Zonai Devices have also been added to the game, allowing the use of wind and water to thwart your enemies. In the trailer, Zelda creates an electricity tornado thing, so it looks like you’ll be able to use the Zonai Devices in combination with other abilities.
Finally, Nintendo confirmed something we may have already assumed based on how much focus is being given to GameShare. Split-Screen co-op is available, but if you want, you’ll be able to share the game via GameShare and play co-op that way through two different systems, provided one person owns the game.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will release on November 6th, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are available today. Stay tuned to MonsterVine for more news on the Nintendo Direct, Musou games, and Hyrule Warriors.
