That’s right, folks. You heard it here. Scrabdackle, the newest title announced by jakefriend, is coming soon to Steam early access. The action-adventure title was shown off during the Six One Indie Showcase this morning, and jakefriend even hung out to give us a closer look at the game.
Scrabdaackle is hand-drawn using traditional animation techniques. And in a trend that is becoming scarily popular, jakefriend says he’s developing the game entirely on his own. This seems a little ambitious, but, well, jakefriend can make that decision.
I’ll let jakefriend set the scene for you:
When the wizard academy is attacked, novice student Blue is thrown out the academy’s window and face-first into the unfamiliar world outside. Pushed out of their sheltered life, Blue reluctantly sets off on a long journey home, learning to navigate the world of Scrabdackle for the first time. Along the way, they’ll contend with daunting foes as well as uncomfortable truths as they reckon with just how much of the world outside differs from their books in the academy.
According to jakefriend, the game has a huge, sprawling, non-linear world, and it seems that way in the trailer. The art style is also incredibly consistent and very whimsical, showing some wild creatures and beautiful UI elements.
Early access will give players access to the first act of the gam,e which boasts a 12 – 15 hour playtime (maybe more if you’re a completionist.) In the Early Access spot on the game’s Steam page, jakefriend would like an episodic release of the game, with acts 2 & 3 to follow in roughly two years.
Scrabdackle will enter Early Access in 2025, and if you can’t possibly wait for this nebulous release date, no worries, there’s a demo available on the Steam page. The Steam page also includes information on jakefriend’s early access schedule.
