Bandai Namco has officially revealed Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a brand-new action RPG set in the beloved world of Sword Art Online. The game is scheduled to launch on July 10, 2026, with pre-orders now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
The newly announced title introduces several franchise firsts while expanding the universe with an original story where players will risk everything inside a dangerous virtual world.
A New Kind of Hero in the Sword Art Online Universe
For the first time in the franchise’s gaming history, Echoes of Aincrad lets players create their own protagonist rather than stepping into the shoes of established characters like Kirito. Players will design their hero through extensive avatar customization before entering a virtual world filled with dangerous monsters, sprawling cities, and mysterious dungeons.
The game embraces the meta concept that defines the series: players enter a virtual reality MMORPG where in-game death carries real consequences. This time, however, the story unfolds from the perspective of a fully customizable player character navigating the deadly world firsthand.
Fast-Paced Combat and Strategic Partnerships
Echoes of Aincrad features fast-paced real-time action combat where players can upgrade weapons, equipment, and character attributes to match their preferred playstyle. As they progress, players will unlock special skills and abilities while facing increasingly powerful enemies and bosses.
Adventurers won’t have to face these challenges alone. Throughout the journey, players can partner with NPC allies, each offering unique combat skills and abilities. Strengthening the bond with these companions unlocks additional abilities and stronger teamwork mechanics, encouraging players to build strategic partnerships as they tackle the game’s toughest encounters.
Exploring the World of Aincrad
Players will explore a variety of environments across the world inspired by Aincrad, from peaceful open plains to dangerous dungeon interiors filled with secrets and powerful foes. Each area is designed to test players’ skill, preparation, and adaptability as they progress through the story.
