FrameOver and publisher Headup have officially revealed The 9th Dragon, a narrative-driven action game that blends tactical combat with free-form beat ’em up mechanics. The game debuted with a new gameplay trailer at the Future Games Show.
The trailer offered the first look at the game’s distinctive voxel art style and neon-soaked urban environments, introducing players to an intense combat system set within the dense streets of Kowloon.
A Rookie’s Fight Through Kowloon
The story unfolds based on player decisions, allowing Rookie to develop into either a heroic officer or a morally ambiguous anti-hero. Choices such as sparing enemies, executing them, or keeping mission funds will influence how the narrative evolves and ultimately shape the game’s ending.
Tactical Combat Meets Beat ’Em Up Action
Combat in The 9th Dragon mixes fast-paced beat ’em up action with tactical positioning. Battles take place in tight indoor spaces and narrow alleyways where managing enemy stamina and using the environment can determine survival.
Players will wield a wide range of weapons, including pistols, Uzis, shotguns, flamethrowers, and explosives, while also relying on brutal hand-to-hand combat techniques. Enemies can be finished with powerful moves like the Grap, allowing players to control the flow of the fight.
Exploration and Hidden Secrets
Beyond combat, players will explore the sprawling vertical maze of Kowloon Walled City. Traversal options include climbing rooftops, crossing cables and ziplines, and blasting open hidden pathways to uncover secrets.
Throughout the city, players can collect vintage comic books that unlock new combat abilities and combo chains. Additional lore items and NPC interactions reveal more about the city’s criminal networks and hidden stories.
The game features 20 enemy types, 8 unique bosses, and roughly 10 hours of story-driven action, with replayable missions that let players experiment with different decisions and narrative outcomes.
