Quantum Conundrum Announced, Portal-like with Time Mechanics

Remember that downloadable title being published by Square Enix? Yeah, its Quantum Conundrum and the game will make its debut at this year’s PAX Prime. The FPS physics oriented puzzle game comes from the work of Kim Swift, whose student project Narbacular Drop became the foundation for Portal. Swift left Valve to work for Airtight Games.

The game takes place in a mansion where players will shift dimensions via a Inter dimensional Shift Device, or IDS. You can shift between dimensions and place rifts to access items in others, like making a heavy safe feel lighter in a low-gravity dimension. There’s lasers, a robot puppy named Dolli, and various types of dimensions like a slow-mo dimension and reverse gravity dimension.

Players will notice the quirky charm in its story as they take the role of a kid dropped off at the house of his rich uncle, Professor Fitz Quadrangle, and after an explosion rocks the mansion and Fitz goes missing, its up to you and the IDS to find him.

Expect 4-6 hours of play from Quantum Conundrum and it’ll release as a downloadable title on PC, PSN, and Xbox Live Arcade in early 2012.
