Have Game Boy (or DS), Will Travel: SB’s Road Rules

In lieu of a serial (again), here’s a little something to think about:

Like many of us, I’m sure you’ve packed a handheld on eight or nine (or in my case, sometimes more) hour flights/drives. While that is all well and good, here’s my takes on the rules of the road for your handheld(s).

1. Headphones are your friend.

Between the CDs in the car and impromptu sing-alongs, you’re wanting to hear the game’s music, not your mom and dad’s flat rendition of “On Top of Old Smokey”. Solution: headphones.

With me, I pack on-the-ears headphones, as earbuds tend to fall out of my ears no matter how well I jam them in. If you do pack earbuds, they can be wrapped around your handheld of choice for quick storage.

2. Don’t forget the batteries/car adapter!

Battery life with a GB/GBC/GBA can last several weeks at a time, even with constant playtime, but it never hurts to have extras (or the car adapter; if you’re packing a DS), because you do NOT want to have the batteries die right before (or after) a major boss fight. (that has happened to me before.)

3. Go ahead, bring your whole collection.

If you have many games, then you may want to pick a few. But since my DS collection is relatively small at the moment, I can get away with bringing my whole collection–just in case I get bored with what’s in there.

4. Keep it small.

Whatever you bring, be sure it is small enough to fit in luggage and under a seat. For me, the DS carry case works just fine–but in case that doesn’t fit, my purse is my plan B

So there you have it–my .02 for bringing your handhelds on a road trip/flight to paradise.
