Drinkbox Studios Unveils Blighted, a Psychedelic Western Metroidvania

Drinkbox Studios, the award-winning team behind Guacamelee! and Nobody Saves the World, has announced its next title: Blighted. Revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025 and spotlighted in Day of the Devs, Blighted is a visually striking, combat-heavy Metroidvania Action-RPG launching in 2026 for PC and consoles.

Set in a “psychedelic western nightmare,” Blighted puts players in the shoes of the lone survivor of a devastating plague—one that has twisted the world and stolen the memories of your people.

Reclaim the Past, One Brain at a Time

In the haunting lore of Blighted, the dead were once buried with seeds in their skulls, growing trees whose fruit preserved their memories. That legacy was shattered by Sorcisto, a figure of mythic horror who consumed the brains of villagers to gain power. Now, the forest of memory is gone, the world is infected, and you’re the last one who can reclaim what was lost.

You’ll fight to recover memories by defeating bosses, devouring their minds, and absorbing their power. But there’s a cost—every gain comes with deeper infection, and the Blight that empowers you could be your undoing.

A World That Shifts as You Fight

Combat in Blighted is skill-based and deadly, requiring precise timing, dodging, and chaining attacks. As you absorb more Blight, the world reacts in unpredictable ways. Enemies grow more dangerous, paths shift, and secrets reveal themselves. This reality-altering mechanic acts as a dynamic difficulty system and is deeply tied into exploration and progression.

Drinkbox promises “nuanced and deadly” combat, as well as rich environmental storytelling. Players will unlock new areas using powers obtained from bosses, solve cryptic environmental puzzles, and uncover deep secrets that reward careful observation.

Play Alone or Bring a Friend

The entire game is playable solo or in two-player drop-in/drop-out co-op, making Blighted the studio’s most expansive and accessible title yet. Whether exploring twisted canyons alone or battling towering horrors with a friend, the game adapts to your playstyle.

The haunting world of Blighted will also be brought to life by a new original score from Jim Guthrie, the acclaimed composer behind Sword & Sworcery, Below, and Nobody Saves the World. His eerie, atmospheric music underscores the game’s tragic and twisted tone.
