The Adventures of Elliot: New Interview Reveals HD-2D Action RPG Details

Square Enix has published a brand-new developer interview for The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, giving fans a deeper look at its world, gameplay systems, and design philosophy. Speaking with Tomoya Asano (Concept & Planning) and Naofumi Matsushita (Producer), the interview sheds light on why this marks the first action RPG in the HD-2D series, what makes Elliot’s adventure unique, and how the team hopes to build on the legacy of Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler.

The game launches in 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but players can experience its Debut Demo now on Switch 2, complete with local two-player co-op and an online-supported player feedback survey.

Why Action RPG and Why Now?

According to Asano, The Adventures of Elliot was born from the desire to evolve beyond turn-based mechanics:

“We started with a classic RPG with Octopath Traveler and went on to do a strategy game with Triangle Strategy. When we thought about where to go next, an action RPG felt like the right challenge.”

This shift brings real-time combat, a single central protagonist, and an emphasis on fluid movement and intuitive controls—while still retaining deep customization systems and rich storytelling that define the HD-2D brand.

Combat, Weapons, and Fairy Mechanics

Combat in The Adventures of Elliot revolves around a mix of melee and ranged weapons, with seven weapon types confirmed: swords, bows, bombs, and more. Players will need to adapt their approach based on enemy patterns and environmental puzzles:

“We’d like for players to think creatively about which weapon best suits the situation at hand,” said Matsushita.

Elliot isn’t alone, either. His fairy companion, Faie, plays a major role with abilities like Warp (teleport to Faie’s position) and Sprint (speed boost for traversal), both of which add layers of mobility and puzzle-solving. Notably, local co-op allows a second player to control Faie directly, a feature that’s even included in the demo.

Magicite and Customization

Magicite acts as a cornerstone of progression, allowing players to customize weapons and abilities through fragment crafting:

“Depending on the combinations you choose, you might find some that are even more useful than you had first imagined,” Matsushita teased.
Loadouts can be swapped on the fly, letting players experiment with different playstyles.

HD-2D Visual Evolution

The game uses a fixed top-down camera, enhanced by what Matsushita calls a “rolling cylinder” effect that gives the world a sense of depth and dimension. This approach preserves the signature HD-2D aesthetic while adapting it for real-time action.

Accessibility and Player Support

Square Enix is keeping accessibility in mind:

  • Fairy Resurrection System: Players struggling in combat can pay Faie to revive mid-run.
  • Simplified Viewpoint: A single-screen, fixed camera ensures spatial clarity.
  • Survey Feedback: The team is gathering player input from the demo, following a similar model to Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy.
