After a decade-long wait, the Culdcept series is finally returning. Neos Corporation has announced that Culdcept Begins will launch worldwide on July 16, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch (digital only), with a Steam version planned for a later date. Physical pre-orders for console versions begin today at participating retailers.
Developed under the full supervision of the original series developer, Omiya Soft, Culdcept Begins marks the first full-fledged entry in the strategy board-and-card hybrid franchise in 10 years. Since its debut in 1997, the series has sold more than one million copies worldwide, earning a devoted fanbase for its distinctive blend of board game mechanics and deep card strategy.
A brand-new trailer has also been released alongside today’s announcement.
An Evolved Culdcept with a New Story and Visual Overhaul
Culdcept Begins serves as a prequel to the original Culdcept, set on the continent of Bavrashka, where diverse races, cultures, and values coexist. The story follows Kamur, a young boy who transfers to the Royal Cept Academy and is soon drawn into a continent-wide conflict after being selected for the Royal Cepter Guard Regiment.
While the core gameplay remains intact, nearly every visual and design element has been rebuilt from the ground up. All cards, maps, and worldbuilding elements have been completely redesigned. Character and creature designs are handled by Satoshi Matsuura, known for his work across multiple popular titles, bringing new life to the series’ signature fantasy aesthetic.
400+ Cards and Endless Strategic Possibilities
At its heart, Culdcept Begins retains the franchise’s defining gameplay loop. Players roll dice to move around a board, claim territories using creature cards, and collect tolls from opponents. Victory comes from expanding your holdings and accumulating the required amount of magic power.
The game features over 400 unique cards, divided into three main categories: Creature, Item, and Spell cards. Players construct a 40-card “Book” (deck) tailored to their strategy. Creature cards summon units to capture and defend territories, Item cards enhance creatures in battle, and Spell cards manipulate the board and alter the flow of play.
By combining the unpredictability of dice rolls with calculated deck-building strategy, Culdcept continues to offer a uniquely layered competitive experience.
Multiplayer Modes and Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements
Culdcept Begins includes a variety of ways to play. In addition to a single-player Story Mode, players can test their skills in Versus Mode against AI opponents or jump online to compete against players worldwide.
Online play includes custom Versus Rooms and a new Quick Match feature for streamlined matchmaking.
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition introduces GameShare support, allowing up to four players to play cooperatively or competitively, even if some participants do not own the game. Mouse functionality is also supported on Switch 2 for smoother, more intuitive control.
Online play on Switch platforms requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Two physical editions will be available for Nintendo Switch 2:
- The Standard Edition ($54.99) includes the base game and a booklet.
- The Limited SteelBook Edition ($89.99) includes everything in the Standard Edition plus a folding box, SteelBook case, soundtrack CD, and 10 physical cards inspired by the in-game Creature Stone Tablets.
