Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games have released a new story overview trailer for Shadow of the Road, offering a closer look at the tactical RPG’s alternate take on 19th-century Japan. The trailer debuted during Gamestar’s Find Your Next Game showcase and highlights the major factions and conflicts shaping the game’s world ahead of its launch later this year.
While the game still does not have a release date, a demo is now available on PC via Steam.
An Alternate Bakumatsu Period with Mechs and Mythology
Shadow of the Road is set during an alternate version of Japan’s Bakumatsu period, where the war between the Shōgun and the Emperor plays out in a country pulled in different directions. That conflict is made even more unstable by the East Nippon Company, which has armed the Emperor’s side with advanced mechs that bring added destruction to the battlefield.
The game’s version of Japan also includes kami and yōkai drawn from folklore and mythology, adding another layer to the struggle. These supernatural forces are not just background flavor either, as they have their own goals within the wider conflict.
A Story Driven by Character Choices
The story follows the journey of Tokugawa’s spymaster, who recruits ronin warriors Satoru and Akira to protect a boy with dangerous, uncontrollable powers. As the group travels deeper into the war, more characters join them, each bringing their own motivations, pasts, and personal stakes.
Player choice plays a major role in how these relationships develop, and decisions can shape friendships, family ties, and the direction each character takes throughout the story.
Turn-Based Battles with a Tactical Focus
On the gameplay side, Shadow of the Road centers on turn-based combat with a strong tactical focus. Each party member brings different skills into battle, and the relationships between characters also affect how encounters unfold.
The setup points to a strategy RPG in which combat and story are closely intertwined, with both battlefield performance and party dynamics shaping the overall experience.
Demo Available Now on Steam
Shadow of the Road is set to launch later in 2026, with a release date still to be announced. Players interested in trying it early can check out the demo now on Windows PC via Steam.
