The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has a new developer diary exploring how Belter language and gestures influence its characters—and your conversations with them. Owlcat Games presented the video during IGN Fan Fest, detailing its work with linguist Nick Farmer and motion-capture specialist Roberto Campanella.
The game launches in spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
Bringing Lang Belta and Its Gestures Into the Game
Farmer created Lang Belta, or Belter Creole, for The Expanse television series. Drawing from numerous languages, it reflects generations of cultural exchange among inhabitants of the asteroid belt and outer planets.
Belter communication also includes gestures developed to remain readable through bulky spacesuits and helmets. Those movements became part of everyday expression, alongside English and Lang Belta.
Owlcat initially planned to build a set of NPC movements around these gestures. The team found that their intensity needed to change with each character’s emotions, intentions, and circumstances.
Some movements also looked different on in-game models than during motion capture because of body proportions or lighting. The developers adjusted the choreography to keep those expressions clear and believable.
A Belter Background Opens Additional Dialogue Options
Choosing a character from the Belt lets you speak Lang Belta, access additional dialogue options, and understand conversations that Earthers and Martians cannot.
Your language skills can also help you gain concessions from Belter characters. Playing as an Earther or Martian means earning their trust first.
Owlcat says slang, gestures, and switching between Belter Creole and English also depend on a character’s circumstances and socioeconomic background, making language part of characterization as well as gameplay.
