Hot on the heels of its release next month, we’ve got a new look at some of the cards in the upcoming Star Trek set for Magic the Gathering. On top of that, we’ve got a breakdown of the new mechanics featured in the set, along with a look at some of the commander cards as well. You’ll be able to get your hands on the new set when it releases on November 13th, or earlier on November 6th if you participate in a prerelease event at your local card shop.
Beam Me Up
Lets you cast certain instant and sorcery spells from your graveyard by returning a creature you control to its owner’s hand and paying the listed cost. Afterward, the spell is exiled regardless of whether it resolves, giving you another use of powerful effects while potentially re-triggering your creature’s enter-the-battlefield abilities.
Face a Dilemma
You face a dilemma whenever you choose one or more modes for a modal spell or ability. It counts even if the spell is countered or fails to resolve, and choosing multiple modes still counts as just one dilemma.
Federation
Federation abilities care about the number of different creature types among the non-Borg creatures you control. The more diverse your crew, the more these abilities can benefit you, though each card uses that number in its own way.
Strange New Worlds
These abilities count the number of differently named lands you control, with each land name counting only once. Exploring a diverse mana base can boost your creatures or enhance other effects, rewarding you for playing lands with different names.
Assimilate
Assimilate converts a creature into a Borg artifact creature, adds a +1/+1 counter, and removes its other creature types. Depending on the effect, you either bring a creature card onto the battlefield under your control or take control of a creature already on the battlefield, expanding your forces for the Collective.
Battlefront (Commander only)
Battlefront rewards you for attacking multiple opponents in the same turn. Each opponent you attack counts only once, even across multiple combat phases, and creatures that enter attacking don’t count toward the total.
Seek Out (Commander only)
Seek Out abilities trigger when you draw your second card each turn, rewarding you for consistently drawing cards. They can trigger on your own turn or an opponent’s turn, making repeatable card draw a powerful way to generate extra value throughout the game.
