Developer Pushing Vertices debuted a brand-new trailer for RollerGirl during the Black Voices in Gaming Showcase as part of Summer Game Fest, offering a closer look at the upcoming slice-of-life adventure inspired by small-town life and early 2000s culture.
The new footage follows Naomi, a 16-year-old whose plans for freedom hit a snag when her first car breaks down immediately. Looking for a way to earn money for repairs, she straps on her rollerblades, grabs her MP3 player, and begins helping the residents of her hometown while uncovering secrets hidden beneath the town’s quiet surface.
A Summer Defined by Choices
RollerGirl blends exploration, relationship-building, and mystery into a coming-of-age adventure where player choices influence how Naomi’s summer unfolds.
As players skate through town, they’ll take on odd jobs for local residents, recover lost items, navigate teenage romance, and slowly unravel a local cover-up. Conversations and music selections play a significant role in shaping the experience, with the game reacting to Naomi’s playlists and dialogue choices throughout the story.
According to director Indigo Doyle, RollerGirl draws heavily from personal experiences growing up in a small town.
“It’s great to be featured alongside other talented Black developers,” said Doyle. “RollerGirl is inspired by my childhood growing up in a small town, and my hope is that players feel seen and represented by our game.”
Skate, Explore, and Build Your Playlist
Music serves as a core part of RollerGirl’s identity. Players can discover tracks throughout the town and expand Naomi’s collection of playlists, all backed by a curated soundtrack inspired by the early 2000s.
The game also encourages exploration, allowing players to skate through open streets, find shortcuts, and investigate backyards and hidden corners of the community. Helping neighbors earns money toward fixing Naomi’s car while also opening new storylines and character interactions.
