Recurring Dream has announced that Desktop Explorer will launch on July 17 for PC and Mac via Steam. The retro-inspired point-and-click mystery game was revealed during the Latin American Games Showcase: SGF Edition, with a demo available now ahead of Steam Next Fest.
The game will also appear during Fellow Traveler’s Story-Rich Showcase on June 6 at 10 AM PT.
A Mystery Hidden Inside an Old Computer
Desktop Explorer begins when your uncle gives you his old PC as a living inheritance. The machine still works, and inside it is a letter asking you to investigate a missing person case.
Also installed on the computer is a mysterious puzzle game called Desktop Explorer. As you dig deeper, it becomes clear that your uncle was not the only person who used the computer, and the program itself may be tied to the larger mystery.
Explore a Fake 90s Operating System
Desktop Explorer builds its horror around a fake operating system inspired by mid-1990s PCs and the early internet.
Players will search through file directories, chat logs, corrupted applications, abandoned software, and hidden folders to piece together the truth. The game also asks players to learn how to open strange file formats and use classic OS tools to progress.
Recurring Dream describes the game as eerie rather than gory, focusing on psychological horror, fragmented memories, and unsettling digital spaces instead of jump scares.
ASCII Art, 3D Spaces, and Old-School Software
The game mixes retro computer interfaces with atmospheric 3D environments rendered in a digital style.
Players can inspect detailed ASCII art, explore forgotten files, listen to an original soundtrack, and interact with nostalgic computer sounds. Desktop Explorer also includes classic-style pre-installed computer games within its fictional OS.
According to Recurring Dream co-founder Jose Carlos, the team wanted to explore how computers preserve human memories and behavior, creating a mystery that feels personal, intimate, and uneasy.
Backed by Outersloth and Mega Crit’s Casey Yano
Desktop Explorer is co-funded by Outersloth and Casey Yano of Mega Crit, best known for Slay the Spire.
Recurring Dream notes that Desktop Explorer takes roughly eight to ten hours to complete.
