The latest Guild Wars 3 development update introduces the Vaelwardens, the oldest guild in Orr and the group players will represent in the upcoming MMO’s story.
Narrative lead Aaron Linde shared new lore on Orr’s golden age, a period before the Elder Dragons reshaped Tyria’s history. During this era, magic spread across Orr without the dragons feeding on it, creating a living magical ecosystem known as the Vael.
The First Guild of Orr
The Vaelwardens began as the Order of the Vael, formed after an early disaster wounded Orr’s magical ecology.
The group sought help from the human gods and found support from Melandru and Dwayna. The goddesses sanctioned the order and gave its members the ability to create and refine signets, small gems that hold fixed forms of magic.
That gift marked one of the first times magic passed into mortal hands.
Signets, Settlement, and Decline
By the time Guild Wars 3 begins, the Vaelwardens have watched over the Vael for more than 150 years from the Tughra Basin region of Orr.
During that time, settlers, guilds, and fortune-seekers have flooded into Orr to profit from its magic-rich lands. Signets became common, valuable, and dangerous, spreading through trade, theft, and black markets.
The Vaelwardens, meanwhile, fell into decline. Their numbers shrank, ancient Vael spirits died, and much of Orr began to view the order as outdated zealots blocking progress.
The Mavenwrights Stand Opposed
The update also introduces the Mavenwrights, a rival guild of industrialists who see Orr’s magical wilds as a resource to exploit.
That conflict sits at the heart of the Vaelwarden story. Players are not framed as chosen heroes, but as members of a fading order trying to protect spirits most people no longer value.
Raising the Banner
As a Vaelwarden, players will use magical signets, build bonds with Vael spirits, and fight to protect Orr during one of the most unstable periods in Tyrian history.
Guild Wars 3 will use the Vaelwardens as its main lens for exploring Orr’s golden age, its magical creatures, and the forces trying to carve up its power.
