Nekcom and 4Divinity have released a new Showa American Story trailer during gamescom Opening Night Live, giving players another look at its post-apocalyptic RPG chaos.
The game is coming to Windows PC via Steam and PlayStation 5.
Choko Heads Across America
Showa American Story takes place in an alternate 1980s where Japan has bought much of the United States.
Players follow Chigusa Choko, a young woman who wakes up from death and finds herself surrounded by zombies, monsters, and survivors across a Japan-influenced America.
California, Companions, and Chaos
The new trailer is narrated by the anime-loving President and follows Choko through California.
It introduces companions Michael Hero and Bubba, the mysterious Mutsuki Akitora, and several enemies Choko will face across the wasteland. The trailer also shows reimagined locations such as Neo Yokohama, formerly Los Angeles, alongside San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Neo Tokyo #4, formerly Austin.
Brutal Combat and Weird Weapons
Choko can fight with melee weapons, guns, counters, dodges, executions, and improvised tools.
The trailer shows bloody combos, takedowns, and over-the-top weapons like samurai swords, a drill arm, and the American flag. Players can mix weapons, upgrade stats, and open new abilities through mini-games.
Arcade Games and Side Activities
Showa American Story also includes side activities and mini-games.
Players can try arcade games like SpaceBunny and ShowaRun, train with dumbbells, play hopscotch, take on side quests, and meet survivors with their own stories.
A Personal 80s Pop Culture Mashup
Nekcom says Showa American Story comes from the team’s experience growing up in China during the 1980s Reform and Opening-Up era, when American and Japanese pop culture entered the country at a rapid pace.
That perspective shapes the game’s mix of Japanese influence, North American landmarks, zombie horror, comedy, and action RPG combat.
