Cryptic Studios Presents Star Trek MMO

Developer Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes) has announced that it will be handling the production of the sci-fi MMO Star Trek and will be bringing the PC-exclusive game to “both console and PC formats.”

As stated on the website, the MMO will feature “customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe.”

The Star Trek MMO was once handled by developer Perpetual Entertainment until it ceased work on the game and was transferred to another developer, who we now know is Cryptic Studios. It is unclear how much of Perpetual’s rendition of the Star Trek MMO will be reflected under Cryptic’s helm. The development of the game is powered by the studio’s internal Cryptic Engine technology, with the first gameplay footage to follow on August 10 at this year’s Star Trek Convention. This may suggest that many of Perpetual’s in-game assets are being re-used.

While we currently do not know of any announced console platforms that the MMO will be on, speculation has come up on a possible Xbox 360 version considering Cryptic’s other game, Champions Online, a superhero MMO, will be heading for release on both PC and Xbox 360 in 2009.
