Atari is diving back into the world of Adventure—but not how you remember it. Announced during the June 2025 wave of showcases, Adventure of Samsara is a 2D Metroidvania action-adventure inspired by the spirit of the iconic Atari 2600 title, but reimagined into something far weirder, more ambitious, and deeply cosmic.
Developed by Brazilian studio Ilex Games, the title is set to launch in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG.
From 2600 Simplicity to Metroidvania Complexity
In Adventure of Samsara, players take on the role of the Solar Champion, a long-dead warrior from Pluto brought back to life by the light of the Sun. Tasked with reawakening a mysterious, interdimensional fortress, the Champion must battle across 10 interconnected biomes, unlocking new powers and uncovering cryptic memories along the way.
This isn’t just another retro throwback. While it evokes classics like Prince of Persia (1989) with its twitchy 2D action and intricate level design, Samsara layers in spiritual themes of rebirth, balance, and cosmic horror, all wrapped in sharp pixel art and slick animation.
What Makes Samsara Stand Out?
According to Atari’s VP of Games, Ethan Stearns, Samsara is “not a remake or a sequel,” but rather a brand-new adventure that lives within the same imaginative DNA as the original Adventure on 2600. Expect references, nods, and easter eggs for fans of the original game, from dragons and keys to familiar structures—now reinterpreted through a much stranger lens.
Players can expect:
- Classic-feel combat and platforming, elevated by modern design.
- Spiritual worldbuilding rooted in interdimensional fantasy.
- Boss fights, augments, and collectibles to shape your playstyle.
- A deeply mysterious narrative surrounding life, death, and memory.
The Rebirth of Adventure
With its mix of retro vibes, Metroidvania depth, and cosmic storytelling, Adventure of Samsara looks like a bold return for one of gaming’s most foundational titles.
