Bandai Namco has revealed the first two playable characters from the upcoming roguelite action RPG Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree, introducing fans to Rekka, a klutzy but deadly swordmaster, and Nishiki, a wandering, devout koi-fish warrior with an impressive physique and a powerful combo-heavy fighting style. The character spotlight was featured during the Bandai Namco Showcase and marks the start of a four-part “Meet the Guardians” trailer series leading up to the game’s release on September 19.
Developed by Brownies Inc. (known for Fantasy Life), Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a hand-drawn isometric roguelite RPG where players dive into dungeons using two playable Guardians per run—one wielding the sacred sword Tsurugi, and the other the magical staff Kagura. Every Guardian brings a distinct set of abilities and combat strategies that can evolve over time through both dungeon-crawling action and village-based upgrades.
Rekka and Nishiki: Fire and Faith
- Rekka is a passionate sword-wielding Guardian and the head of the Eternal Flame Dojo. Despite being clumsy in her day-to-day life, she’s a formidable AOE-focused warrior on the battlefield with strong combo attacks and reliable balance.
- Nishiki, on the other hand, is a muscular humanoid koi fish who, humorously, can’t swim. As a wandering spiritualist, Nishiki sees the battle against evil as a form of charity. His agile movement and high-speed combos make him an ideal choice for players who like to keep enemies on their toes.
Players will need to carefully choose a pair of Guardians before each dungeon run, factoring in synergy, upgrade potential, and combat style. With six more characters yet to be revealed, Bandai Namco promises even more surprises in the coming weeks.

About the Game
Set in the serene but threatened Shinju Village, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree tells the story of a priestess named Towa and her eight companions as they battle the growing threat of Magatsu. The game blends rich character progression, evolving village stories across timelines, and strategic dungeon-crawling with meta-upgrades and crafting.
