Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2003, is receiving a remake. The survival horror game follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they use the camera obscura to escape a ghost-filled village, forced to re-enact a blood ritual and fight hostile ghosts. Let’s see what’s involved in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Revealed
Man, Japan just does horror so well. Maybe it’s because I’m from the States and there’s the added element of being a stranger to their land, but Fatal Frame always looks like it’s going to scare me into never playing horror games again. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a full remake of the second game in the Fatal Frame series.
We’ve been told that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will feature a complete overhaul of the original game, including graphics, audio enhancements, improvements to the core gameplay systems, and controls. The presser we received also boasts that the camera obscura, Fatal Frame’s central gameplay element, is being overhauled. Remake is promising a “richer and more captivating gameplay experience both during exploration and combat.”
A Fatal Frame remake is an interesting one, as, despite being a dormant series not seeing an entry since 2014, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is still considered one of the scariest games ever made. In 2014, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was released to middling reception and middling sales. Though being locked on the Wii U didn’t help it, eventually, in 2021, it’d see an HD remaster for modern consoles with updated visuals and new costumes.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is scheduled for release in early 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Though the game will only be voiced in Japanese, it will include text for English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
