Square Enix has officially unveiled more details for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the upcoming remake of the PlayStation classic, arriving on February 5, 2026, across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Windows. Fans can look forward to a fresh hand-crafted art style, a cast of reimagined characters, and a battle system designed to give the classic RPG a modern edge.
A Hand-Crafted World Reborn
Originally designed by Akira Toriyama, the characters of Dragon Quest VII have been re-envisioned with a charming 3D aesthetic that resembles miniature figurines. Towns, dungeons, and landscapes now carry a diorama-like feel, creating a cozy but detailed world that complements the game’s nostalgic roots. Event scenes have also been remade in this style, blending familiar moments with a newly polished presentation.
Heroes of Estard Island
The story begins on the quiet shores of Estard Island, where the Protagonist, a fisherman’s son, dreams of life beyond the sea. His journey intertwines with a vibrant cast:
- Kiefer – Prince of Estard, inquisitive and eager to uncover the world’s mysteries.
- Maribel – Strong-willed but sweet, determined to accompany her friends on every step of the adventure.
- Ruff – A cheerful boy with animal-like instincts, always alongside his loyal wolf companion.
- Aishe – A Roamer warrior skilled in both swordplay and dance, devoted to the Earth Spirit.
- Sir Mervyn – A seasoned knight of the Almighty, once a hero who fought alongside the deity itself.
Together, they’ll travel between worlds using ancient tablet fragments, unraveling the truth behind their mysterious land.
Battles With Strategy and Style
Combat in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined builds on its turn-based roots with modern improvements. Characters can master a variety of vocations, unlocking unique spells, abilities, and powerful “vocational perks” that unleash devastating effects when characters are fully roused. Players can even moonlight in two vocations at once, adding new layers of strategy.
The pace of battles has been streamlined with adjustable speeds and auto-battle options. Weaker enemies can now be defeated directly in the field without entering a full combat screen, keeping exploration brisk.
Extra Challenges and Rewards
For players seeking more, the game includes side content like a battle arena featuring legendary foes, and the returning Lucky Panel minigame for rare rewards. Post-launch, three DLC packs will expand the experience with bonus items, costumes, and even battles against iconic enemies from the Erdrick Trilogy.
A Legendary Return
With a release date set for February 5, 2026, and special editions offering collectibles and costumes, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is shaping up to be both a celebration of the past and a bold step forward for the series. Fans can experience the reborn journey across multiple platforms, with more details coming during the Tokyo Game Show 2025 stage event.
