Outward 2 Revealed With Summer 2026 Release Window and First Gameplay Details

Nine Dots Studio has officially unveiled Outward 2, the long-awaited sequel to their best-selling action RPG, with a Summer 2026 release window. The news arrived alongside a brand-new trailer shown during the PC Gaming Show: Tokyo Direct at Tokyo Game Show 2025.

The first game, which recently surpassed 3 million players, built its reputation on challenging open-world survival that rejected the typical RPG power fantasy in favor of realism, preparation, and consequence. Outward 2 looks to refine and expand upon that identity with new features while keeping the uncompromising spirit intact.

An Adventurer, Not a Hero

In Outward 2, you’re no chosen one; you’re an ordinary wanderer carving out a life in the dangerous world of Aurai. Players can choose from three starting scenarios and eleven backgrounds, each shaping the beginning of their journey.

Failure isn’t the end, but another turn in the story. Whether you wake up injured, robbed, or rescued after defeat, the consequences ripple forward, ensuring no two playthroughs feel the same.

A World That Breathes and Changes

The sequel introduces a full seasonal cycle that alters not just visuals, but gameplay. Frozen rivers become pathways in winter, NPCs migrate between towns, and each of the four new regions carries unique weather hazards, like the blizzards of the Gilded Mountains or the acid storms in the Gathes of Catharsis.

These shifts demand flexibility, prompting players to adjust their strategies as the world evolves.

Survival Through Mastery

Outward 2’s progression emphasizes skill through practice. The new Exercise system lets passive abilities emerge naturally from your playstyle, whether it’s armor choices, weapon usage, or magic rituals. Trainers scattered across Aurai can also help refine your survival techniques, for a price.

Magic requires preparation, too. Ritual casting involves layering components together, like launching a fire stone to empower surrounding abilities. Combat has been rebuilt with player feedback in mind, offering more weapon variety, fluid animations, and tactical depth.

Preparation Is Everything

Inventory remains central to the experience. Choosing what to pack is as important as how you use it, from food and potions to camping gear and weapons. A new mule companion offers added storage, but with its own vulnerabilities, players will need to consider whether the convenience outweighs the risk.

Better Together

As with the first game, co-op is key. Outward 2 supports both two-player split screen and online co-op, giving adventurers more ways to survive Aurai’s challenges together.

A Clearer Vision

Guillaume Boucher-Vidal, CEO and Creative Director at Nine Dots Studio, shared how the team is now equipped to deliver their full vision:

“With Outward 2, we finally have the means to deliver the vision we had for the game—a believable and grounded adventurer experience… With better graphics, immersion, and combat, we’ve stayed true to our vision while elevating the experience of living a true adventurer’s life.”

Players can wishlist Outward 2 on Steam now, with playtests set to open ahead of launch in 2026.
