SNK has brought back a 1998 fighting classic with the release of Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers, now available on Steam for $19.99. This modernized re-release is the first entry under SNK’s new NEOGEO Premium Selection label, bringing upgraded features and online support to one of the most beloved titles in the FATAL FURY series.
A Refined Fighting Classic
First hitting arcades in 1998, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 is often seen as the pinnacle of SNK’s early fighter design. The new release refines that experience with rollback netcode, online lobbies for up to nine players, and multiple competitive tournament formats including single elimination, double elimination, and round robin. A Spectator Mode also allows fans to watch matches live.
The Biggest Roster in Fatal Fury
The game features the largest character roster in Fatal Fury history, with 23 fighters. Returning icons like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui are joined by newcomers Li Xiangfei and Rick Strowd, while the hidden fighter Alfred adds even more unpredictability to battles. The game’s signature Sway Line system also makes a comeback, keeping the action fast, fluid, and full of tactical depth.
Training and Extras
Beyond versus play, players can hone their craft in a fully equipped Practice Mode. This includes speed adjustments, record-and-replay options, and even a hitbox viewer, offering serious tools for fighters looking to sharpen their skills. A Gallery Mode featuring 59 pieces of classic Fatal Fury artwork and media adds to the package, making this re-release more than just a nostalgia trip.
NEOGEO Premium Selection Begins
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers represents the first entry in SNK’s NEOGEO Premium Selection series, remastered and modernized re-releases of arcade classics backed directly by SNK. The label aims to preserve and elevate these historic titles with features that bring them in line with today’s competitive and casual fighting game scene.
