Celestial Return Is a Cyberpunk-Noir Narrative RPG Where Dice Decide Life and Death

Metaphor Games, in partnership with publisher Shoreline Games, has officially announced Celestial Return, a striking cyberpunk-noir, dice-based narrative RPG launching on PC via Steam in spring 2026. Backed by a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign that surpassed its funding goal by more than 200%, the game blends cosmic horror, detective fiction, and tabletop-inspired mechanics into a grimly stylish sci-fi experience.

A Neon-Soaked Detective Story With Cosmic Horror

Set in the decaying metropolis of Netherveil City, Celestial Return puts players in the worn-out shoes of Detective Howard, a man with little left to lose. As the city’s dead begin clawing their way back to life, Howard investigates a disturbing string of suicides tied to corporate corruption and eldritch forces lurking just beyond reality. Armed with a rusted badge, a pocket of stolen dice, and a sharp-tongued sentient rose, players must navigate a world where survival is never guaranteed.

Dice Are Everything

Celestial Return’s core hook is its dice-driven gameplay, where rolls act as currency, weapons, and lifelines all at once. Dice fuel conversations, bribes, and desperate last stands, while also serving as a limited resource, players must carefully manage. Hoarding dice can close off opportunities, while reckless rolls may leave Howard exposed and vulnerable. Progression is tied to the development of Howard’s personality traits, turning dialogue and decisions into high-stakes confrontations.

Choices Shape a Branching Narrative

Every decision in Celestial Return carries weight. The game’s branching narrative unfolds through pivotal crossroads shaped by player choices, encouraging multiple playthroughs and dramatically different outcomes. Intelligence, virtue, and foolishness each open distinct paths, reinforcing the idea that the battlefield is often Howard’s own mind.

A Hand-Drawn World With Comic Book Soul

Visually, Celestial Return stands out with a fully hand-drawn art style that fuses the precision of manga with the raw energy of American comics. The result is a grim, expressive world that bleeds atmosphere, perfectly complementing its noir tone and cosmic themes.

Expanding Beyond the Game

Metaphor Games is also extending Celestial Return’s universe beyond the screen with a series of Webtoon comics exploring Netherveil City’s underbelly. Designed to act as a narrative companion, the comic series ties directly into the game’s story, with its final episode leading seamlessly into the opening moments of the RPG itself.

From Kickstarter Darling to PC Release

Developed by award-winning writers from TTRPG publisher Metis Creative, Celestial Return earned Kickstarter’s “Projects We Love” distinction and attracted a passionate global community. With Shoreline Games handling publishing duties, the team aims to bring its dark, dice-driven vision to an even wider audience.

Celestial Return is set to launch in Spring 2026 on PC via Steam.
