Bethesda Game Studios has announced that Starfield will officially launch on PlayStation 5 on April 7, arriving alongside two major content drops: the Terran Armada story expansion and the Free Lanes update.
Originally released in 2023, Starfield has steadily evolved with new systems, features, and community-driven content. This upcoming release marks the game’s largest update to date, positioning it as the most complete version yet for both newcomers and returning explorers.
Starfield Expands to PlayStation 5
With its PS5 debut, Starfield opens up the Settled Systems to a broader audience. The PlayStation 5 version takes advantage of the console’s hardware features, including adaptive triggers, the DualSense lightbar, and touchpad functionality.
Players on PlayStation 5 Pro will also have access to enhanced options, allowing them to choose between Performance Mode for higher frame rates and Visual Mode for improved fidelity. Bethesda is also lowering the barrier to entry, with the base game priced at $49.99 across all platforms.
Terran Armada Brings a New Story Campaign
The Terran Armada DLC introduces a brand-new questline spanning the Settled Systems, centered on a rising robotic threat. Players will encounter new characters, locations, enemies, and gameplay systems as they work to determine humanity’s future in space.
This expansion adds meaningful narrative content while expanding the sandbox with new rewards and progression opportunities.
Free Lanes Update Overhauls Exploration
Launching alongside the DLC, the Free Lanes update is a free content drop that significantly expands how players explore space. Its most notable addition is interplanetary travel within star systems, allowing players to cruise between planets in real time.
This new traversal system introduces dynamic encounters and onboard activities, giving players more reasons to engage with their crew and ships during long journeys.
Beyond traversal, the update adds a wide range of new features, including new locations, expanded points of interest, and increased environmental variety. Players will also gain access to X-Tech, a new upgrade resource, along with enemy modifiers that introduce tougher, more varied combat encounters.
The update further enhances gameplay with the addition of a Moon Jumper vehicle, improved outpost systems such as cross-outpost storage, and new companions, including Muria and a mini-bot crew member. Players progressing into New Game Plus will also benefit from improvements that allow certain items to carry over through the Unity.
Trackers Alliance Expands Bounty Hunting
Bethesda is also continuing its support for the Trackers Alliance, which was first introduced in 2024. This update adds five new bounty hunting adventures, complete with new targets, contracts, and rewards.
Players who already own the Trackers Alliance content will receive these additions at no extra cost, while newcomers can access the full experience through Creations Credits.
A Defining Update for Starfield
With its PlayStation 5 launch and a wave of new content, Starfield is entering a new phase. Between the expansive Terran Armada storyline, the transformative Free Lanes update, and continued post-launch support, Bethesda is clearly positioning this as the definitive way to experience its sprawling sci-fi RPG.
For players who have yet to step into the Settled Systems or veterans looking for a reason to return, April 7 looks to be a major milestone for Starfield.
