Tiny Metal 2 Opens Steam Co-Op Playtest on April 2 Ahead of Spring 2027 Launch

Tiny Metal 2 is finally making its return, with Area 35 announcing a limited Steam playtest running from April 2 through April 29. The upcoming tactical wargame sequel will give players their first hands-on chance to jump back into the series since 2019’s Full Metal Rumble.

The month-long test will include single-player and local co-op, while giving fans a chance to help shape the game through feedback on its balance, pacing, and overall systems. Spaces are limited, so players interested in trying Tiny Metal 2 will need to register through Steam before the playtest begins.

Tiny Metal 2 expands the battlefield with land, air, and sea combat

Area 35 is using this playtest to showcase a larger version of the Tiny Metal formula. Battles in Tiny Metal 2 will play out across maps built around combat on land, in the air, and, for the first time in the series, at sea.

That naval addition is the standout here. The sequel introduces battleships, destroyers, submarines, and other sea-based units, adding a new layer of strategy that the earlier games lacked. If Area 35 can make naval combat feel as sharp as its ground battles, it could give Tiny Metal 2 a stronger identity than just being another turn-based war game in an Advance Wars-inspired space.

The playtest will also feature new factions alongside returning ones, allowing players to build mixed-unit armies and test different combinations on larger battlefields.

New mechanics and up to four-player battles

Another major addition is Focus Fire, a new combat mechanic that lets multiple allied units combine their attacks into one coordinated strike. It sounds like a smart way to make positioning and unit planning matter even more, especially in bigger engagements.

Area 35 says the playtest will support up to four-player battles, which should make the co-op side of Tiny Metal 2 one of its more interesting hooks. The studio is clearly aiming for larger and more varied encounters this time, with plenty of room for players to experiment with army composition and, ultimately, more control over how they approach each conflict.

Pax East attendees can try it early

If you’re heading to Pax East, Area 35 says Tiny Metal 2 will be playable for the first time in North America at the studio’s booth. The developer will also be showing off Felicity’s Door for Apple Arcade, as well as a new multiplayer arcade project currently going by Project Blitz.

For longtime fans, though, the main draw is easy. Tiny Metal 2 is the first real return for the series in years, and this playtest should offer a solid look at how much the formula has changed.

The full game is currently set to launch in spring 2027.
