While the fate of Star Wars Battlefront III remains unclear, the publisher Lucasarts announced a new entry in the third-person shooter series for the Nintendo DS and PSP.

Titled Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, the game is due out this fall. Rebellion is handling the PSP edition while n-Space has been tasked with the first Battlefront title for the Nintendo DS.

Offering a “deep and engrossing single player campaign” that will be centered around the rivalry between the Force-sensitive clones X1 and X2, players will combat each other on-foot or in vehicles amongst various locales that include Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, and Yavin IV.

Both versions will allow for character customization such as gender and species, with the PSP supporting up to 16 persons in multiplayer while the Nintendo DS offers 4 players to battle against each other.

From the official press release:

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron features a deep and engrossing single player campaign that spans the entire Star Wars Saga – and beyond. Gamers assume the identity of X2, a clone trooper created from the DNA of a Jedi Master. Originally tasked with eliminating Jedi during Order 66, X2 decides to leave his blood-stained past behind and joins the Rebellion. X2 isn’t the only Force-sensitive clone, however. X1, his clone brother, chooses a much more sinister path, leading to a confrontation that could determine the fate of both the Empire and the Rebellion.
