THQ Nordic and developer Campfire Cabal have released a new developer diary for Expeditions: Samurai, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the historical RPG’s art direction and visual development.
Titled The Art of Expeditions: Samurai, the video features Creative Director Jonas Wæver discussing how the team drew from Japan and traditional Japanese art while building the game’s identity in Unreal Engine 5.
Bringing Feudal Japan to Life
Expeditions: Samurai is set in Japan around the year 1600, placing players in the middle of political conflict, warlord rivalries, and personal choices that can shape their crew’s future.
The new developer diary shows concept art, character customization, and the team’s work to push the game’s visuals further. Campfire Cabal is also adding a series first: players will see their fully customized character model during dialogue sequences.
Companions will also display dynamic facial expressions based on their mood and relationship with the player, adding more personality to conversations and story scenes.
Choices, Combat, and Co-Op
Like past Expeditions games, Samurai focuses on branching role-playing, tactical turn-based combat, and multiple ways to handle situations. Players can fight, talk, or sneak through encounters while shaping their party through equipment, skills, and upgrades.
The game will also support co-op, letting players experience the campaign alone or with a friend.
The final release is planned to include around 60 hours of gameplay, fully voiced dialogue, and eight companions with their own backgrounds, quests, and personal goals.
Early Access This Summer
Expeditions: Samurai is coming to PC via Early Access this summer. Some features, including the ability to earn the title of Hatamoto and manage a village, will be added during Early Access rather than at launch.
Players can wishlist Expeditions: Samurai on Steam now.
