SEGA and RGG Studio have shared an extended look at Virtua Fighter Crossroads, a new entry in the legendary fighting game series planned for release in 2027.
Following its Summer Game Fest appearance, Producer and Creative Director Riichiro Yamada, Art Director Ryo Shibasaki, and Battle Director Yosuke Takeda detailed the game’s narrative-driven structure, city setting, and new battle system.
A Fighting Game With a Story-Driven Structure
Virtua Fighter Crossroads moves beyond the traditional competitive fighting format with a narrative action-adventure built around combat, exploration, and player choice.
The story follows four protagonists, each carrying their own past, motives, and convictions. Their paths intersect in Vilasapara, a city where fighting, politics, and crime syndicates all collide.
Choices made in and out of combat will shape alliances, consequences, and character outcomes.
Welcome to Vilasapara
The story takes place in the year 20XX, after the Arma Carta ended years of bloodshed in Vilasapara. The city’s crime syndicates now maintain an uneasy balance, but that peace begins to crack as President Bato pushes the Vila Fight Fest into the national spotlight.
At the same time, martial artists are being targeted by a mysterious attacker known as the Bakunawa Killer.
Known as the City of Martial Arts, Vilasapara includes a walled central city, entertainment districts, resort areas, and other neighborhoods filled with side stories and quests.
New Combat With Versus Mode Support
Virtua Fighter Crossroads will feature multi-opponent brawls, boss fights, and story-based combat encounters alongside a full Versus mode.
SEGA says the game retains the streamlined controls and tactical depth associated with Virtua Fighter while adding more dynamic battle situations for its story mode.
Local and online options will be included for Versus play.
Writers From Games, Film, and TV
The story team includes several notable writers.
David Hayter is serving as World Building Supervisor, with Brad Kane as Lead Writer. The writing team also includes Scenario Director Tsuyoshi Furuta, known for work on the Like a Dragon and Judgment series, and Scenario Writer Shinji Yamamoto, whose credits include Persona 5 Royal and Shin Megami Tensei IV.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads launches in 2027.
