Danchi Days will launch on Steam on October 29, bringing players into a comedic and bittersweet adventure set around a Japanese mass housing complex.
The game comes from the co-creator of Anodyne and Angeline Era and follows 12-year-old Hoshino as she returns to her hometown to live with her grandma, who has dementia.
Reviving a Summer Festival
To cheer up her grandma, Hoshino sets out to revive the local summer festival.
That means meeting neighbors, learning what is going on around the danchi, and dealing with people who do not want the festival to return. The story mixes odd humor with heavier moments about memory, family, anger, and sadness.
Meet the Neighbors
Danchi Days features a cast of residents from different parts of the community.
Some are friendly seniors. Some are frustrated teens. Others are adults trying to get through the day. Each person adds another piece to Hoshino’s view of the neighborhood.
Players can also browse the in-game internet to learn more about the people around them, though some corners of the web point toward darker parts of the story.
Kappa Sidekick and Strange Minigames
Hoshino is joined by Moro-Q, a kappa sidekick who helps her search for the five offerings needed to bring back the summer festival.
Along the way, players will explore forests and buildings while taking part in “Sense Games,” minigames built around odd actions like smelling trees, hugging plushies, and listening to toilets.
