Square Enix has announced that the Dragon Quest franchise has surpassed 100 million games sold as the RPG series celebrates its 40th anniversary.
The milestone comes four decades after the original Dragon Quest launched in Japan in 1986.
40 Years of Dragon Quest
Dragon Quest has grown to include 11 mainline games alongside numerous spin-offs, anime, films, novels, manga, and merchandise.
Square Enix credits the series’ accessible RPG systems, stories, characters, monster designs, artwork, and music as major parts of its long-running appeal.
Recent Remakes Helped Push the Series Forward
Recent releases include Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, which together retell the Erdrick Trilogy with updated visuals, added story content, and gameplay changes.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined followed in early 2026, rebuilding the 2000 RPG with handcrafted 3D character designs, diorama-style environments, streamlined exploration, and expanded story elements.

More Dragon Quest Games Are Coming
The series recently brought back another older release with Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age comes to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, while DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World launches December 3, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Xbox on PC.
Dragon Quest XII Remains in Development
Square Enix also reiterated that Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams remains in development as the next mainline entry.
The company released a new celebration video featuring series creator Yuji Horii to mark the 100 million sales milestone.
