Samantha’s Top 8 Games of the Last 8 Years

The last eight years have been filled with fantastic games. Here are my top picks of the games I’ve played that were released from 2008-2016.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
“The Professor Layton series won a place in my heart with its combination of puzzle and great (if crazy and sometimes absurd) stories. The third game, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, set a new standard for the series, with an exciting plot and an emotional conclusion.”

undertale

Undertale
“Few games have made me laugh as hard as Undertale did. Add in an awesome soundtrack, memorable characters, and some surprising twists, and it’s a game I won’t forget for a long time.”

to-the-moon

To the Moon
“To the Moon has an intriguing premise and a wonderful story. It was sad at times and hilarious at others, and I can’t wait for the sequel.”

the-world-ends-with-you

The World Ends With You
“I’ve put more hours into The World Ends With You than any other game. Despite an unusual combat system that takes a bit of work to get used to, it’s a fantastic game with a gripping plot filled with mysteries, twists, and memorable characters. Certain math phrases will never be the same again.”

bayonetta-2-wii-u-e3-e3-2013

Bayonetta 2
“I missed the first Bayonetta entirely, but when Bayonetta 2 was bundled with the original for the Wii U, a quick play of the demo was all I needed to pre-order it. Both proved to be among the most insanely fun action games I’ve ever played, and the way their stories work together made them even more enjoyable.”

steinsgate-screenshot

Steins;Gate
“I bought Steins;Gate because I heard the protagonist was a self-proclaimed mad scientist. After several hours of being amused by his behavior and intrigued by the time travel elements, the plot kicked into high gear and I barely put it down until I saw every ending.”

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
“After I ignored the Kingdom Hearts series for years, I finally gave it a chance with the PS3 remixes. I fell in love with the whole series, but especially with Birth By Sleep. The characters, the gameplay, the Command Board mini-game, and the surprisingly dark plot made it not only my favorite Kingdom Hearts game, but one of my favorite RPGs.”

tales-of-symphonia-chronicles

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
“Thanks to Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, I was finally able to play Tales of Symphonia, a game recommended to me for years. The gameplay was fun and I liked the world, but the characters and plot are what really won me over. Exciting plot twists, important themes, and a particularly interesting villain–what more could you ask for? I may have missed the original game’s release, but Chronicles introduced me to what became one of my favorite games of all.”
