SQUARE ENIX is celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Final Fantasy XI Online with a massive May update that brings with it a long-requested feature, challenging new content, and even a crossover with Magic: The Gathering. Whether you’re a returning veteran or a curious newcomer, there’s never been a better time to revisit Vana’diel.
Race Change System Now Live
For the first time in the game’s long history, Final Fantasy XI now lets players change their character’s race and appearance. The paid “Race Change Service” allows one switch within 14 days of purchase, giving players a chance to see Vana’diel through a brand-new lens. You can find full details on how to initiate your transformation here.
Ambuscades, Besieged, and Vana’Bout Return with New Twists
The May update also introduces fresh challenges to Ambuscade battles, with Orcs and flies making their return to test your party’s mettle. Meanwhile, Besieged now features Level 11 Beastmen and a new Morale Gauge that reflects the condition of the Five Serpent Generals during invasions. Team up with these powered-up allies to protect Al Zahbi in style.
Players can also take part in the returning “Vana’Bout” Records of Eminence event—either solo or cooperatively—to earn new rewards while contributing to global objectives.
Free Login Campaign Through May 26
To mark the anniversary, Square Enix is running a Return Home to Vana’diel campaign. Former subscribers can jump back into the game for free through May 26 at 1:00 a.m. Pacific, giving them full access to explore all the latest additions and nostalgic locales.
Magic: The Gathering x FINAL FANTASY XI
During the special 23rd “Vana’versary” livestream, Producer Yoji Fujito revealed three more cards for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering crossover. Joining the previously revealed “Shantotto, Tactician Magician” are “Shantotto’s Coercion,” “Vana’diel Adventures,” and “The Shadow Lord,” giving fans a new way to celebrate the series in tabletop form.

From now through May 30, players can take advantage of discounted rates on world transfers and expansion packs.
