Fallen Tear: The Ascension Unveils Stunning New Trailer at OTK Games Expo

Indie developer Winter Crew is making a strong case for Metroidvania of the Year with Fallen Tear: The Ascension, which just debuted a striking new trailer at the OTK Games Expo. The hand-drawn sidescroller blends JRPG elements with classic Metroidvania exploration, and it’s now targeting a Q1 2026 release on PC and consoles.

Set in the vibrant, overgrown world of Raoah, Fallen Tear puts players in control of Hira, a young warrior with a mysterious past and even more mysterious powers. As Hira journeys through lush forests, ancient ruins, and ominous dungeons, he’ll unlock a range of customizable Ascension Abilities, allowing players to shape their approach to both combat and exploration. Think double jumps, energy bursts, and movement skills that reveal hidden paths others can’t access.

But Hira’s not alone in this fight. In a twist on traditional Metroidvania structure, Fallen Tear introduces “Fated Bonds,” a JRPG-style party system that lets players team up with other characters from across the realm. These companions bring their own skills into battle via assist mechanics, enabling layered, combo-based combat and adding emotional depth through branching relationships.

Trailer Highlights:

  • Massive, Interconnected World – Explore dozens of beautifully illustrated biomes with secrets at every turn.
  • Dynamic World Shifts – Choices matter. Raoah responds to your actions with new paths and evolving challenges.
  • Fated Bonds System – Recruit and battle alongside a diverse cast of allies in a fresh twist on JRPG-style party mechanics.
  • Fluid Action Combat – A blend of modern side-scrolling intensity and classic RPG depth.
  • Legendary Composer – Motoi Sakuraba (Golden Sun, Dark Souls) lends his talents to an orchestral soundtrack that elevates every zone.

Described by GamesRadar as “the Elden Ring of Metroidvanias” due to its enormous map scale, Fallen Tear isn’t shy about ambition. The hand-drawn art style recalls classics like Odin Sphere and Dust: An Elysian Tail, but the added complexity of moral choices, changing environments, and tactical party play gives it a personality all its own.

“We’re hard at work crafting a world worthy of our community’s passions,” said CMD Studios founder Stephen Manalastas. “We’re grateful to OTK for giving us a chance to showcase more of the excitement awaiting everybody in Fallen Tear!”

Fallen Tear: The Ascension launches on PC and consoles in Q1 2026. Fans can wishlist the game on Steam now and follow development across social channels for updates and behind-the-scenes content.
