Studio Wife, Cornmandog, and Yotsuba Interactive have announced that their upcoming emo visual novel–rhythm game hybrid, I Write Games Not Tragedies, launches on November 14, 2025. The game will be available on Steam, and players can wishlist it now ahead of release.
Described as honest, sad, humorous, and unapologetically cringe, I Write Games Not Tragedies blends interactive storytelling with scream-powered rhythm gameplay for an experience that’s equal parts emotional breakdown and self-aware catharsis.
Three Eras, One Disastrous Life
The story follows Ash, a struggling creative whose journey unfolds across three distinct eras:
- The Late 2000s – Ash’s “baby bat” phase: eyeliner, bad poetry, and first heartbreaks.
- The 2010s – A downward spiral of anxiety, addiction, and quarter-life crisis energy.
- The 2020s – The “elder emo” era, filled with reflection, humor, and the quest for purpose.
Each chapter captures the awkward charm and emotional chaos of growing up, complete with the genre’s signature dark humor and unfiltered honesty.
Sing, Scream, and Score High
I Write Games Not Tragedies isn’t your typical rhythm game. In addition to hitting notes in time, players will need to literally scream lyrics to rack up higher scores—because what’s emo without a little emotional release?
The gameplay pairs hand-drawn, sketchy black-and-white visuals with a soundtrack that channels the spirit of mid-2000s angst. The art style reflects the tone perfectly: dark, messy, and deeply personal.
Wishlist Now
For fans of offbeat narrative games and those still clinging to their MySpace-era eyeliner, I Write Games Not Tragedies promises a weirdly heartfelt trip down memory lane, equal parts tragedy and therapy session.
You can wishlist the game on Steam now ahead of its November 14 release.
