Arc System Works America has announced that River City Saga: Journey to the West will launch on June 4, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The game will be priced at $19.99.
The new entry adapts Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, through the lens of the River City series.
Kunio Takes on Journey to the West
In River City Saga: Journey to the West, the main characters from the classic story are reimagined as Kunio-style characters. Sun Wukong, Zhu Baije, Sha Wujing, and Tank Sansang set out for Tianzhu in a comedy action-adventure built around roguelike progression.
Players will grow stronger across repeated runs by collecting Secret Skills from gods who appear throughout stages. With 80 Secret Skills available, builds can shift depending on which abilities players find.
Three Fighting Styles and Familiar Faces
The game begins with the speed-focused Sun Wukong, with the power-focused Zhu Baije and long-range Sha Wujing unlocking as the story progresses. Each style offers a different approach to fighting through enemy groups.
Familiar River City characters will also appear throughout the adventure, sometimes helping Kunio’s group and sometimes showing up as bosses.
Kunio-kun Marks 40 Years
Alongside the launch date news, Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun has opened a commemorative site for the series’ 40th anniversary. Fans can look back at past titles and follow new updates on the broader Kunio-kun series.
