Outriders: Worldslayer Preview – Gone Fishin’

I had the chance to check out and preview the upcoming expansion for Outriders, titled Worldslayer, and it was pretty sick. The environments were nice to look at, the loot was neat, and the enemies were fun to blast away.

Before we dive in, keep in mind that I haven’t played too much of Outriders, especially recently, so I won’t be delving too deeply into the plot. I’m primarily focused on how fun the game was, and how the experience was overall. Right off the bat, I was designated team leader, which terrified me. Thankfully, the team I was with was great, and working together was a breeze.

My time with Worldslayer primarily took place in an icy tundra. It wasn’t one-note in appearance though, as the barren plains of ice made for some pretty stunning scenery. The eerie little village we visited after was a refreshing mix-up too, leading to some dandy variety in locales in just an hour or so that I played for.

Despite my lack of experience with the game, I was able to pick up on the controls and what was happening pretty quickly. It’ll be a bit tough to rate certain facets of the gameplay, as I was playing remotely through Parsec which can lead to delay, but I can say that it was a lot of fun regardless. I chose the Trickster class, because they’re the goofiest to mess with, and got to work slowing down enemies and hacking them apart. We were a pretty well-balanced team, so everything went pretty smoothly for us from the get-go.

Throughout the demo, we picked up a fair amount of equipment, as you could expect from a looter shooter such as this. It all looked pretty sweet and had a variety of diverse visual themes. After fighting some pretty big monsters, we ended up in a little fishing town. One character told us all about the history of the town, and the legend of a vengeful fisherman who haunts the small town. I thought it was just fun world-building as we plowed through grunts and the like without a care in the world.

The best part came towards the end of the playthrough when my teammates and I battled the legendary fisherman that we had heard so much about. He was essentially a large troll-man with hooks as weapons, and he was quite the tough boss. He threw hooks, taunted our team, and just generally intimidated us with his huge physique and monstrous health bar. It took a few revives and a metric ton of ammo, but we managed to topple the fierce fisherman on our first try. Not bad!

Overall, Worldslayer seems like a pretty robust expansion for Outriders. The equipment looks quite cool, the monsters are fun to slay, and the bosses are genuinely interesting. If you haven’t played Outriders since launch, now may be a great time to hop back in with Worldslayer. And if you’re fairly new to it like me, jumping in now will get you all prepped for Worldslayer’s release.
