NieR: Automata E3 2016 Trailer, Release Window

Although the PlayStation 4 exclusive action RPG NieR: Automata was not shown during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, Square Enix has released its E3 trailer.

The trailer shows some of the characters, beautiful environments, and the exciting action combat we’ve come to expect from PlatinumGames. Check it out.

Square Enix also explained the premise of the story:

“Invaders from another world attack without warning, unleashing their secret weapon: the machines. In the face of this insurmountable threat, the human race is driven from the earth and takes refuge on the moon.

“The humans develop an army of android soldiers to fight back against the mechanical horde, but succeed only in slowing its advance. To break the deadlock, a new breed of android infantry is sent into the fray: the YoRHa squad.

“In the forsaken wasteland below, the war between the machines and the androids rages on. A war that is soon to unveil the long-forgotten truth of this world…”

NieR: Automata is a sequel to the 2010 action RPG NieR, which is itself a spin-off of the Drakengard series. NieR follows the fifth ending of the first Drakengard game, and NieR: Automata is set after the fourth ending of the first NieR.

Unlike the original NieR, its sequel is being developed by PlatinumGames. This is due to its stronger focus on action, although it will still have RPG elements.

Automata stars three androids: 2B, 9S, and A2. All are combat androids created to fight the invader machines, as described in the story premise. 2B is the main character, although multiple characters are playable within the game.

While no release date has been announced for NieR: Automata yet, the trailer concludes with a release window: early 2017.
